SM Pool Academy
Engineering-led answers to the questions that matter before building a pool, replacing equipment or planning maintenance.
How is pool construction cost calculated?
Dimensions, structure, finish, mechanical equipment and operating preferences shape the total budget.
Learn more027 minHow do pool mechanical systems work?
Suction, filtration, disinfection and return lines form one controlled water circuit.
Learn more035 minWhat matters when selecting a pool filter?
Diameter alone is not enough: flow, filtration velocity and backwash conditions must be assessed together.
Learn more045 minWhy do pH and chlorine values matter?
Comfort, disinfection performance and equipment life depend on balanced water chemistry.
Learn more056 minHow should a pool plant room be designed?
Access, drainage, ventilation and organised pipework are fundamental to safe operation.
Learn more065 minHow often should a pool be maintained?
Daily water checks, weekly cleaning and periodic technical maintenance serve different needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an Olympic and semi-Olympic pool?+
An Olympic competition pool is 50 metres long; a semi-Olympic pool is commonly 25 metres. Lanes, water volume, user load and circulation capacity all change the design.
Does a pool mechanical system require a design?+
Yes. Pool volume, turnover time, pipe losses, balance tank, pump and filter capacity must be calculated as one system.
How often should pool water be filtered?+
Turnover time depends on pool type and user load. A private pool and a busy sports facility should not be designed to the same cycle.
Overflow or skimmer pool?+
Overflow systems collect surface contamination evenly and suit high loads; skimmer systems can be more compact. Architecture, use and budget determine the choice.
Why is a pool pump noisy?+
Air ingress, cavitation, blocked pipework, bearing wear, an incorrect duty point or missing vibration isolation are common causes.
When should a pool filter be backwashed?+
Backwash when pressure rises materially above the clean starting value or flow falls. Pressure and performance are better guides than a fixed calendar.
What causes cloudy pool water?+
Insufficient filtration, unbalanced pH, low disinfectant, high load or fine particles can cause cloudiness. Diagnose before adding chemicals.
Is a saltwater pool chlorine-free?+
No. Salt electrolysis produces chlorine from dissolved salt. It can simplify handling, but measurement, pH control and cell maintenance remain necessary.
